Comic Cover Art of the Week (July 3rd, 2019)

Happy New Comic Book Day!

This is a huge week for dope cover art. I never know what to expect when I start researching for these posts. I can always anticipate having at least a solid handful of covers to post, but this might be the biggest one I've ever done. So let's get to it.

I'm starting this week's entry by highlighting a couple of ladies in the indie scene. Here's Heathen #7 by Natasha Alterici and She Said Destroy #2 by Liana Kangas. Also, both books are published by Vault Comics.

While scrolling through this week's releases, both of these covers jumped out at me. From their styles to color palettes, these are two neat pieces.

From one theme to another, this next set of covers all belong to new #1s out this week. Space Bandits by Matteo Scalera, Aero by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau and Lois Lane by Jenny Frison. All three of these bring something different. Space Bandits sticks out for its perspective and neon look.

I like Aero for the energy that comes off and its coloring. Lois Lane earns a spot because Frison is another of the best cover artists out today. It's the look she gives Lois as well as the edges of the cover, giving it a vintage feel. Saying both of these artists are well known for their covers is a massive understatement.

That segues into a set of DC covers featuring solo characters. Well, one you could say is solo-ish. Batgirl #36 by Joshua Middleton, Green Lantern #9 by Frazer Irving and Justice League #27 by Arthur Adams. Just wow all around.

Some indie series take the spotlight in this next set. From Black Mask Comics is Black AF Devil's Dye by Maika Sozo and Image's Section Zero by Ben Caldwell. The coloring on these make these pop.

The Carnage fan in me couldn't finish this off any other way than by spotlighting the Carnage-ized variants out this week. Paint the town red with Uncanny X-Men #21, Spider-Gwen Ghost Spider #10, Immortal Hulk #20 and Savage Avengers #3. These deadly variants are brought to you by Declan Shalvey, Iban Coello, Nick Bradshaw and Leinil Francis Yu.

What covers from this week's releases are your favorite? Which ones tempted you to pick up a book you haven't read before?
