Comic Cover Art of the Week (June 26th, 2019)

Happy New Comic Book Day! Another week, another large offering of comics. And with that comes plenty of art to draw you in. I've also added hyperlinks to artist and indie publisher's Twitter accounts or websites. And I'll be doing that going forward.

This week, I'm starting off with some samurai action. Who doesn't love that? From Source Point Press comes the debut issue of Samurai Grandpa. Shawn Daley, who's also the series' artist, provides this cover featuring our titular samurai holding a bloody sword. A wise man once said "tis better to hold sword then to be stuck with sword."

These next two covers are for White Widow #2 by Jamie Tyndall and Mike Debalfo, respectively. What I learned while researching this week's comics is that Absolute Comics Group is an imprint under Red Giant Entertainment. So there ya go.

What I like about these covers initially is the coloring. When I looked a bit more, I picked up on all the spiders in Tyndall's piece. And then the skeleton and gun in Debalfo's. It also has this liquid feel to it, similar to Marvel's symbiotes.

This pick came as a shock as I've never connected with this franchise. Here is Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40 by Jamal Campbell (keep him in mind).

It's just a cool cover. I don't know the story relevance, but the White Ranger appears to be jumping up, with sword out, as glass shatters down.

Not to be outdone, in an even bigger surprise, here are TWO(!) Action Comics covers. This is not a prank, comic lovers, I assure you. Jamal Campbell (remember him?) brings us the standard cover. And standard does not do this piece justice. Ben Oliver, making consecutive appearances, delivers this powerful variant. I may have to get both of these.

Rounding out this week's selection of cool art is Dan Quintana's variant for Detective Comics #1006. It's just a dope piece. What else can I say?

Now I want to know: what cover art stood out to you this week? Did any catch your eye and make you want to try a book you haven't read? Let me know.
