Comic Cover Art of the Week (June 19th, 2019)

Happy New Comic Book Day! My return to blogging begins with a fresh entry in my Comic Cover Art of the Week series. With this series, I celebrate the artists out there plying their trade to catch our eyes (and dollars) every week.

I'll kick this off with American Carnage #8 by Ben Oliver. I like this cover solely because she's playing with action figure versions of characters. And that's ok. This won't be Oliver's only appearance on this list.

Captain Marvel #7 Variant by Mike McKone

Next up is Captain Marvel #7. This variant by Mike McKone features Spider-Man in his sleek Big Time costume. The glowing green and the buildings lit up behind him make this cover stand out.

Side note: a new Marvel Legends action figure of this costume is due out later this year.

Even though Aquaman is just a seahorse crossing guard, this variant cover to Aquaman #49 by Joshua Middleton has a natural appeal to it. It makes you want to be free and take to the ocean. Or stare at it from afar.

From looking at the ocean to jumping across the pond, here's James Bond 007 #8. Here we have covers by Dave Johnson and current series artist Eric Gapstur.
Johnson depicts the villainous Goldfinger sitting a top of seat made of gold. I bet Goldfinger has one too. Gapstur's cover is fitting as it acts as a metaphor for the current story arc. Have no fear, no spoilers are here.

Typically, I would have chosen some cover art that stood out and selected one as my favorite of the bunch. I couldn't quite choose this time. And seeing as how this is my return to blogging, I'll cheat and choose all three. So we have Guardians of the Galaxy #6 Variant by Gerald Parel, Livewire #7 Variant by Becca Farrow and Batman #73 Variant by Ben Oliver (told ya).

Each of these artists brought something that popped to me. Silver Surfer flying through the city guided by Parel's hand is quite the visual. It's easily the most memorable aspect from the Fantastic Four films. I actually have no idea what Livewire is about, but I like the energy coming from Farrow's piece. It certainly piques my curiosity. And we round it out with Oliver's Batman coming from the shadows with his face hidden and Batarang ready.

And now I'm curious, which comic book covers on shelves (or digital storefronts) stood out to you?
