SDCC 2025: BOOM! Studios’ Marian Heretic Takes On Religious Horror and Monster Hunting

San Diego Comic Con 2025 has not been shy with comic news. One of those announcements, Marian Heretic, comes from publisher BOOM! Studios and creators Tini Howard and Joe Jaro. Check out the press release, preview pages and my take below.

Acclaimed writer Tini Howard (Catwoman) and lauded artist Joe Jaro (Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer) launch their very first creator-owned series at BOOM! Studios with a provocative, high-octane new take on nunsploitation, religious horror, rebellion, and good ole fashioned monster hunting in MARIAN HERETIC, coming October 2025.

Sister Marian is a witch hunter of the highest order, a Mother Superior, and a heretic guided by a Goddess the Church refuses to acknowledge. When the Holy Father brands her order blasphemers, Marian strikes a dark bargain to become their personal enforcer.

As she delivers murderous judgement night after night in the city of Vespers, she can feel her soul fracture…but what else can she do with the lives of her sisters at stake?

MARIAN HERETIC #1 features main cover art by series artist Joe Jaro, with variants by Dylan Burnett, Jenny Frison, and Suspiria Vilchez.

My take:

As a longtime follower of BOOM! Studios, I can attest to their penchant for dropping titles with unique premises that often catch fire or become underrated titles. The hitch with Marian Heretic could possibly be the religious aspect as that can be a divisive subject. However, comics have never shied away from that realm. One piece that will put eyes on it is curiosity about what Howard and Jaro will do with this story. Bring on the evil.
