Comic Cover Art of the Week (July 17th, 2019)

Happy New Comic Book Day! San Diego Comic Con also kicks off with Preview Night today too. Before I jump into my picks, I want to give a shout-out to all the colorists, inkers and letterers out there. You continue to create and help bring stories to life without much credit. Even from your own publishers! And as I post these, I don't know the names of everyone on the art teams. Publishers, get on that. I'll be talking about that soon. Now, on to the art.

New series are a good place to start another entry. So why not have two? Here's Sera and the Royal Stars #1 by Nathan Gooden and Tim Daniel from Vault Comics and Collapser #1 by Nick Derington comes from DC's Young Animal imprint.

Dan Fraga's cover for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #264 takes me back. I've always loved the G.I. Joe franchise. Fraga delivers some popular characters and vehicles heading into action. YO JOE!

Color and space rule the day for James Bond 007 #9 and Silver Surfer Black #2. It isn't just the colors chosen, but how they're used. Thank you, Khoi Pham and Marcos Martin.

Taki Soma and David Mack bring our next pair of covers. First is the variant for Pearl #11. Then we have American Gods: The Moment of the Storm #4. The character's expressions and colors used are the draws here.

Rafael de Latorre and Marcelo Maiolo bring us this gem for Animosity #22 from AfterShock Comics. This is another where the color is striking.

The next slot belongs to a couple of DC's troublemakers getting some close-up action. Ryan Sook gets an extra nod for his Aquaman #50 variant for showing reflections of Aquaman and Mera in Black Manta's eyes. My YouTube viewers will know how fond I am of covers that do this. Then there's Batman #75 by Gabriele Dell'Otto who just kills every cover.

With more Carnage-ized variants hitting shelves today, you didn't think I'd actually drop this entry without including any, did you? Of course not. These two stunning pieces, Captain Marvel #8 and Uncanny X-Men #22, come from In-Hyuk Lee and Jay Anacleto.

So now I want to know, what covers stood out to you? Which made you curious about a series you haven't read? Also, if you're at, or headed to, San Diego Comic Con, safe travels and have fun!
