Will AWA's Rumpus Room be Weird Comics Fun?

Rumpus Room, an upcoming series from AWA Studios, looks to bring some more "dark satire" to the world of comics. To do that, writer Mark Russell, penciller Ramon Rosanas, colorist Ive Svorcina and cover artist Tony Harris have teamed up for the five issue series coming in September.

Take a look at the preview pages, then check out my thoughts after.

From AWA:

Eisner Award-winning writer Mark Russell (NOT ALL ROBOTS) returns to AWA with his latest dark satire, with art by Ramon Rosanas (YEAR ZERO VOL. 1).

Meet Bob Schrunk, technocrat billionaire, collector of bad art, and victim of a hideous skin condition that can only be treated with a highly illicit and definitely not FDA-approved face cream that must be… harvested. From human beings.

Bob isn’t unfair, though. He’s happy to let his guests select who will be next to be sent from the Rumpus Room to their doom. There’s just one thing Bob doesn’t know: one of his current guests is an undercover cop — and she’s carrying a concealed gun.
Rating: Mature

My thoughts:

I've said for many years how comic books offer their own brand of craziness. This series seems to want to add its name to that with its premise and I'm all for it. I like its visual style. The expressiveness of the characters is always an eye-catcher and we're seeing that here. Some questions going in include:

How do people end up in the Rumpus Room?

How do they select the next to die?

And what's with the animal costumes? (See: comic brand of crazy)

I don't often drop previews. Simply because there are so many comics out there and the bigger comic sites can handle that. But I will, on occasion, for some interesting titles. The indie side of comics is full of quirkiness and has something for everyone. We'll see what Rumpus Room has in store for fans on September 20th.
