Comic Trailers Are What the Industry Needs [+VIDEOS]

I came across a new trailer from Marvel, and not one related to a movie or television show. This trailer showcased the upcoming relaunch (yes, another one) of the Avengers title. It spotlights the creative team and roster. This lineup does feature many Avengers mainstays from throughout the team's history.

Setting the relaunch debate aside for now, I have been a huge fan of comic trailers for years. And while the comic industry is no stranger to the format, it could certainly benefit from utilizing them more often. Below are some examples of recent trailers from a few publishers.

Connecting with non-comic fans, or even the casual ones, has been an obstacle the industry has faced for some time. The movies and television shows have garnered attention from the masses, and rightfully so. What that has done for the source material is difficult to determine.

In a time when even movie trailers have release dates, that hype isn't going to wane anytime soon. Movie studios and comic publishers should take advantage of that and try to put as much attention on the source comics as possible.

Comic trailers serve multiple purposes. One, they allow comic book publishers to reach more people. As the saying goes: "Meet the people where they are." YouTube, and the video format as a whole, are absolute giants. Taking advantage of that medium to promote comics guarantees more eyes and attention on comic books. That's potentially more mindshare and more people directed to comics.

And two, they provide another creative format to promote comic books. They're also a nice callback to the motion comics Marvel released back in 2009-2010. While they didn't produce many of them, they were an interesting way to experience a comic story.

There's a moment in the Women of Marvel trailer at the 0:15 mark where Silk and Black Cat are rocking and it's absolutely charming and pure. I'm hoping the publishers already making them continue doing so and for the companies who aren't to at least consider them.

What do you think of comic book trailers? Do you think they help the industry in terms of awareness of comics in general? Share your thoughts.
